Acupuncture Services for Pets

Acupuncture is an ancient Chinese practice which uses needles inserted into specific areas in the body to alleviate inflammation and pain. The practice is great for pets with chronic illnesses like arthritis or to support pain management. If you’d like to learn if this could be a good fit for your pet, please contact us at 403-217-0460.

How do you know where to insert the needles?

Acupuncture has been used as a form of holistic medicine for centuries, with specific acupuncture points identified throughout the body. These areas are typically where nerves and blood vessels meet. When needles are inserted, they help improve blood flow, stimulate the nervous system and alleviate pain. By improving the flow of oxygenated blood, the process generates healing and the release of pain relief substances that are naturally in your pet’s body. Since acupuncture has very few side effects, it is safe for pets who are in good and poor health. Over time, the treatment could even reduce the amount of medication your pet needs.

What conditions is acupuncture a good fit for?

Our veterinary team will be able to best advise you if acupuncture is a good fit for your pet, depending on their overall health. Some conditions it can be helpful for include:

  • Arthritis or other joint inflammation
  • Hip dysplasia
  • Diabetes
  • Cancer
  • Infections

What happens during my pet’s sessions?

Before your pet’s first treatment, our team will assess their overall health and which areas need to be targeted. Sessions typically last between 20-30 minutes, depending on what we’re treating. The frequency of your pet’s appointments will depend on the severity of their illness or injury. The more sessions your pet has, the more improvement you’ll notice over time. We’ll re-evaluate when we see this, making adjustments to your pet’s treatment plan.
